Central Botanical Gardens of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus

Study of Hippophae in Belarus is lead in two basic ways: research of plants biology and technology of fruits foodstuff. They are carried out in some institutions.

During many years Central Botanical Garden of the Belarus Academy of Sciences does fundamental and applied research in the field of Hippophae introduction. Polymorphism of natural populations on the territory of the former USSR has been studied, different sorts in conditions of Belarus have been tested. We studied different aspects of plants biology: phenology, growth and development, morphogenesis etc. Physiological and biochemical particularities: water regime, biochemistry of fruits and leaves, chlorophyll and carotenoids complex have been studied. Agrotechnics of seeds and vegetative reproduction have been worked out.

Cycle of works in investigation of adaptation of different climatypes of Hippophae in conditions of Belarus with the aim of selection of the most productive and adaptive for selection has been finished. This research was carried out by means of study of morphogenesis in onthogenetical cycle.

We carried out selection by means of hybridisation and chemical mythogenesis. We have got perspective forms.

About 100 works have been published on the basis of the materials of our research. Two dissertations are ready. A number of methodical recommendations has been published.

As a result we created definite theoretical aspects on wood plants introduction in Belarus on the example of Hippophae. They are of general character and can be used in the work with other plants.

The second centre of Hippophae studies in Belarus is institute of fruitgrowing (Ministry of Agriculture). They also have a collection of sorts, they study biochemical structure of fruits, selectional work is carried out. But the main thing they do is reproduction of Hippophae and creation of plantations. Study of technology of fruits keeping and foodstuff is carried out too.

Institute of warmth and mass exchange works with Hippophae too. They created a technology and a plant for drying Hippophae. This plant works in Russia and Mongolia.

Now we work at a programme which would unite all studies.

International co-operation in this field would be very important.
